- Author(s)

- Abstract
- Rural students are identified as a disadvantaged group when it comes to access to university education. Although many 'barriers to entry' to studying at university have been identified, few studies have attempted to explore the unique concerns faced by rural students using qualitative methods. The aim of the current study was to explore the social and emotional barriers faced by this cohort by conducting several focus groups and depth interviews with them. A consistent theme emerged whereby the social stigma associated with being 'disadvantaged' revealed that this inadvertently forms yet another barrier for entry to university. Implications for universities and social marketers are discussed in terms of social change required within the sector.
