- Abstract
- Access to capital is one of the key issues facing the social economy. This paper uses a case study of an original proposal to retrofit community housing with sustainability improvements to explore the capacity of Australia's social investment landscape to finance innovation in the social economy. While the proposal is characterised by a high degree of complexity, we tentatively find that it suggests that despite the push for social economy organisations to be more entrepreneurial and adopt market-oriented funding and financing approaches, a deficiency in the institutional, regulatory and policy environments appears to disadvantage smaller enterprising organisations. Further research is needed to assess whether this is typical of non-profit experience.
