Title: 'Qualitative methods' for ergonomics research involving human participants

Abstract: The context for this chapter includes the intention of this book to help increase the range of ways that ergonomists do research, including using more qualitative methods, and that the kind of research we are discussing here involves human participants. In particular we were charged with the task of showing the principles and practices on which such qualitative research should be based. We have reviewed over thirty ergonomics research papers. We provide summaries of what those papers are about and analyse them in relation to some principles about doing and reporting qualitative research that we develop elsewhere in the chapter. The intention is to comment on how the research could be made more rigorous and reported more completely.
