- The teaching-research nexus and the Australian Research Quality Framework

- Abstract
- There is a possibility that the introduction of the Australian Research Quality Framework (RQF) may impact upon any nexus that currently exists between teaching and research in Australian universities. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a critical analysis of the implications of the RQF for a teaching-research nexus, including implications for the future of investigation and evaluation of teaching in the Australian higher-education system. The presentation is based on literature including: Brew (2003), "Teaching and Research: New Relationships and their Implications for Inquiry-based teaching and learning in Higher Education."; Elton (2001), "Research, Teaching and Scholarship in an expanding higher education system"; Jenkins (2004), 'A guide to the research evidence on teaching-research relations'; and Zubrick et al. (2001), 'Strengthening the nexus between teaching and research'. Features of the RQF that relate to a nexus between teaching and research are identified and their likely impact discussed. Many factors that contribute positively and negatively to an interaction of teaching and research are unlikely to be affected by the introduction of the RQF. Some factors that have been associated negatively with a teaching research nexus, such as a tendency to define academics as research only or teaching only, are likely to be exacerbated by the introduction of the RQF. It is also likely that recognition of the investigation and evaluation of learning and teaching as research will be more limited under the RQF than is currently the case.
