National identity is a subject of continuing concern within Australian society. When I started writing this paper, I began to notice how regularly the subject appears in the Australian media in any number of contexts. But it is in the area of the arts, particularly the popular representational arts, where it really becomes hot property. Since the 1970s Australian artists have very consciously sought to produce work which both reflects an Australian specificity and maintains a place within international artistic currents. The Australian film industry has played one of the most prominent roles in the debate around representation and Australian identity.
