- The paper describes an interactive multimedia (IMM) simulation and the learning methodology PIER (PIER is an acronym for Problem based learning, Interactive multimedia, Experiential learning and Role-play) to guide the learning from the simulation. The research question raised in this paper is the following: How can effective learning be ensured from a simulation of an information system project that is escalating and failing? The remainder of the paper is organised in the following sections: Firstly a short discussion of the trends in IMM will be given followed by an outline of the PIER methodology that facilitates the learning from the simulation. Thirdly, a discussion of the implementation of the failure simulation and the use of PIER at a South African and Swedish university will follow. Lastly the paper concludes with a short summary of the preliminary result of the implementation of the simulation and the learning environment, based on the research question.
