- Abstract
- In this chapter, we discuss our experiences in developing and delivering the Bachelor of Behavioural Studies (BBS) degree to large cohorts of online students. The BBS programme is offered in a fully online format by Swinburne University of Technology (Swinburne) through Open Universities Australia (OUA). The chapter discusses the business drivers for the programme, the nature of the OUA-enroled cohort, and the different career opportunities offered by programmes accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) versus those not accredited by APAC. We highlight the flexible study pathways available in psychology when not constrained by the stringent training requirements leading to registration as a practising psychologist(the APAC domain). The discipline of psychology aims to understand normal behaviours as well as abnormal behaviour; the level of coverage given to abnormal behaviour in APAC UG programmes reflects a focus on clinical practice as a primary career outcome. We argue that flexible offerings in psychological studies deliver most of the graduate attributes of APAC-accredited psychology programmes, but differ in the breadth of coverage of specific psychology contents.
