Title: Embedding library services and information literacy: successful online library liaison for TAFE (Technical and Further Education) students in Australia

Abstract: A successful initiative discussing a new direction in library liaison will be presented. Working collaboratively with academics, the eLearning leader,and other liaison staff, a TAFE liaison librarian discusses the process involved in enhancing the library's role in a student's online experience using the LMS, Blackboard. Traditionally, a liaison librarian works with staff and students in the face-to-face classroom environment, however the eLearning environment is changing the educational landscape rapidly. Embracing these changes, the librarians, and teachers are adapting to provide best practice opportunities for their students. Librarians face the new challenge of delivering information literacy and library orientation sessions to students who will never visit the physical library. By taking a different angle to the concept of liaison, the librarian can now make the library and its services more relevant to the online student by working closely with eLearning and teaching staff to become part of the online learning environment in ways never before imagined. This session will detail the changing role of the liaison librarian and the challenges of acquiring new skills, presenting in an online environment, and adapting current pedagogy to best meet changing student needs.
