Housing is a basic human necessity. Moreover, it is an expensive necessity with a significant proportion of income dedicated to covering the cost of housing. This paper examines the current perceptions of managers in the building industry of Victoria, Australia, toward electronic commerce? Electronic commerce offers the opportunity for the building industry to improve its performance and reduce the cost of housing as these benefits have already been felt in other industries. The paper outlines the finding of a series of interviews conducted with building industry managers. The preliminary investigation found the actual use of electronic commerce by the organizations ranged from primitive to non-existent. Managers considered the unwillingness of others in the industry to commit to electronic commerce to be the main reason for this, understanding that the true benefits of electronic commerce could only be realized through the involvement of the entire industry.
