In this paper a mixed mode modelling approach is used to facilitate an increased level of research activity and output within a business school of an Australian university. A simple, but nonetheless informative, mathematical representation of the problem of maximising research output (quantum) is initially developed to facilitate the establishment of research output targets for the school. This procedure requires input from both senior management of the school and from the “soft” model, the Human Resources Model (HRM). The interaction between the two models and the nexus of their objectives is examined and a simple soft heuristic procedure to obtain “best practice” developed. The way in which the soft HRM model achieves its objectives is via a change management regime for the school. Mixed mode modelling has been chosen as the approach since it is the blending together of hard and soft paradigms surrounded by a soft “solution” mechanism, to provide the “best practice” solution to a problem.
