- In 1908 George Swinburne founded the Eastern Suburbs Technical College. In the century since, the college, which quickly adopted the name of its founder, has grown to become today’s Swinburne University of Technology. As it approaches its centenary, Swinburne continues to expand on the strengths of its past and has grown to around 40,000 students and 2,000 staff, with five campuses in Melbourne and one in Malaysia. This book sets Swinburne’s story firmly in the context of the last one hundred years of Melbourne’s history. George Swinburne’s original interest in technical education and his firm belief in self-improvement, and the broader social benefits of an educated populace, have underpinned the university’s approach to education throughout the century of its operation.
