- Abstract
- The way communication occurs in organizations has changed dramatically in the past 20 years, so much so, that research in industrial/organizational psychology seems to have failed to keep up with these changes. However in spite of this gap in research, an implicit assumption seems to be made in organizations and in the literature that the more sophisticated the technology, the greater the efficiency gains. The present chapter reviews all the research which is pertinent to communication in organizations, for instance, formal and informal networks, technology and organizational structures, electronic communication types in organizations, emerging problems with communication technologies, and occupational health and technology. Various areas for future research are recommended in occupational health and technostress, computing technology skills and employment, efficiency gains from communication technologies, human relationships, and communications theory.
