Ageing and stress: ergonomic issues in employing the older worker

Abstract

Gerontologists now urge us to consider a future in which the elderly remain fit and healthy. 'Old age' is receding more into the lifespan distance with the prospect of a longer working life becoming more viable. At the same time, many benefits accrue for employers in recruiting older workers to their workforces. However, today's workplace presents growing challenges to an employee's health, especially through stress. This paper discusses the issues at stake for applied ergonomic research regarding ageing, work and stress in the context of an ageing workforce continuing to work for some 20 years longer than was previously the case.
