Abstract: Catalogue for the exhibition 'Savage luxury: modernist designing in Melbourne in 1930-1939', held at the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne from 14 July to 04 November 2007, curated by Nanette Carter. It brought to public attention the emergence of architectural and design modernism, patronage, reception and its retailing within the context of economic, social and political forces in Australia during the 1930s. Combining five room settings and a series of five themed areas, incorporating textiles, ceramics and glass, plans and elevations, technology items, posters and publications, this exhibition was very well attended and reviewed. A floor talk, a seminar (with Dr Juliet Peers & Prof. Harriet Edquist RMIT University and Dr Jennifer Phipps independent curator) and two architectural tours (with Prof. Phillip Goad, University of Melbourne) were held to support and expand on the exhibition’s content.
