Abstract: Five years ago Australia was in the midst of a small but controversial influx of asylum-seekers. These were mainly people fleeing from Iraq and Afghanistan, whose governments were pursuing brutal policies denounced by the Australian Government. During 2000, the busiest year, 4995 of these people arrived by boat on the Australian coast. [Introduction]
