Abstract

The introduction of High Speed Rail (HSR) between Beijing and Shanghai brings a serious challenge to airlines servicing this market. This paper assesses the competitiveness of HSR to air transport from the perspective of customers. Based on the analysis of this study, it can be seen that HSR service is very competitive in the Beijing-Shanghai market. It is believed that if airlines do not significantly improve their on-time performance and further drop airfares in the future, there is great risk for air transport to continually lose its current market share to HSR in the future.
